Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies represent an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true danger facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the global 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A US startup can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
