From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master the talented storyteller has kept fans guessing with extensive world-building, a diverse cast of characters, and a thrilling plot showcasing divine entities, fiends, and dark forces growing in power within the city.
Note: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season lie ahead.
The Warrior Group Unveiled
The third episode ended with a major cliffhanger and introduced the premier party of heroes who will branch out from the main group to begin their independent quest, apart from the additional parties.
This warrior group consists of Teor Pridesire (played by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (Laura), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), Wicander Halovar (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie Daymond).
Why Split the Party?
With 13 cast members, it was clear from the outset that keeping everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.
This explains, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, intertwining the characters’ stories before splitting into three separate parties: Warriors, Schemers, and Questers.
Characteristics of the Combat Party
As described by the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for players who are drawn to a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where diplomatic options are few and far between.
Upon first impression, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander might look unsuited, but the developments of episode 3 make it clear why these five characters are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.
Reasons to Leave
For one thing, the party has a clear idea where to proceed after a brutal initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.
An old friend of Thjazi Fang—whose demise initiated the narrative’s action—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, entering the hidden lair, assaulting Thimble, and taking all the magical artifacts to dispose of.
The antagonist then cleared his debts and escaped to a fortified location in the remote area, beyond the urban center, with Teor’s brother hot on his heels.
Personal Motivations
Secondly, each adventurer has a personal reason to depart Dol-Makjar:
- The agile hero, as the close ally and closest confidant, seeks revenge.
- Kattigan knows the northern area and warns that it is a hostile location.
- The strong character and Wicander, having disobeyed his house’s orders to kill Teor and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
- However, their reputation as prominent individuals in the influential clan could assist the group access areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Furthermore, The grateful character vowed a life debt to The savior for his deliverance and will now go with him everywhere.
Wanted and Hunted
Finally, all of them are sought by the powers that control Dol-Makjar for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind dangerous:
- The rogue and The hero are known criminals.
- Tyranny and Wicander betrayed House Halovar and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
- Teor is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.
This leaves them little choice but to travel to the northern region in search of Casimir.
Future Episodes
According to the latest episode’s post-show segment, we learn that the warrior group will be absent next week, leaving the other eight participants to round up the Explorers and Strategists groups.
Fans can look forward to finding out which characters will be assigned to which table in the story’s last Overture episode, available to watch on next week.
