Colombia's President Declares 'I Will Resort to Weapons Once More' should US Invades.

President Trump and Colombia's president have escalated the tone in their verbal conflict, increasing tensions bilaterally after US forces struck Venezuela to remove the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He runs drug factories and production sites and his time is running out," Trump remarked.

Rising Tensions and Claims

Speaking to journalists over the weekend, the American leader hinted at comparable armed intervention against Bogotá, stating the nation faces serious problems and governed by a problematic figure involved in producing the drug and distributing it to the US."

Although Colombia remains the leading source of the narcotic, no proof exists linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly tied to the illicit industry.

A Frayed Partnership

This nation has long been a key ally of the United States in the fight combating drug cartels and enjoyed bipartisan support in Washington, but relations have soured markedly since Trump came to office.

The nation's drug trade is largely controlled by criminal organizations like one major cartel, the ELN guerrilla group and dissident factions of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), the majority of whose members laid down arms following a 2016 peace deal.

The President's Defiant Answer

When asked whether a military operation like that in Venezuela was a possibility for Colombia, Trump responded: "I like the sound of that to me."

Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who disarmed in the last century, firmly denied Trump's claims. "I am not illegitimate nor am I involved in narcotics," he declared.

"He comments without information. Stop slandering me," he wrote in a message.

"If US bombs target rural communities, they will become thousands of guerrillas across the countryside. And should they arrest the nation's leader, whom many of the population admires and supports, they will release the ‘jaguar’ of the populace," he admonished.

From Fighter to Statesman

The president dedicated part of his youth as a member of the leftist M-19 insurgent movement but is not believed he did not participated in combat. Upon leaving the group, he participated in drafting the constitutional rewrite in 1991 subsequently becoming a prominent senator. He served as mayor of Bogotá before winning the nation's highest office.

"I made a vow not to touch a weapon again ... but for the homeland I will take up arms again," he affirmed.

Reinforced Protection and Broad Condemnation

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the national leader's security detail had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s conservative opposition have sided with Trump's stance, however, leaders spanning the ideological divide have condemned the threats of a US attack targeting Colombia.

Diplomatic and Financial Strains

The US cancelled his travel authorization subsequent to he called on US military personnel to ignore orders that violate law. In October, the US enacted economic restrictions on Petro, the first lady and various associates.

Concurrently as the US increased its military presence near Venezuela and striking alleged narcotics traffickers against Venezuela’s Maduro, the US have also conducted strikes on maritime targets in Pacific waters off the Colombian coast.
